Virtual Microscopy (VM) involves the scanning of glass microscope slides to capture high resolution digital images that are then montaged together to create a composite digital file that can be accessed via computer-based visualization tools. Thus, in principle, VM enables the teaching of microscopic features in the context of the entire slide without the use of either glass microscope slides or light microscopes. While many schools are already using VM to either supplement, or subsitute for, conventional methods of teaching Histology, Pathology, etc., there is still much debate about its strengths and weaknesses as an educational tool. USUHS has begun to explore the use of VM (see first three links below). Links to other VM sites are being added to this page as we become aware of them.
NOTE: This is a "developing technology". The files are quite large; there are numerous bandwidth and software issues remaining to be resolved. Most sites are designed to work with Internet Explorer and/or Safari, but feel free to try using your favorite browser. As we accumulate more information and experience, we will post a more informative document about the various methodologies, platforms, vendors and pros/cons of VM.
